Bullying and health complaints in children an overview from international research in the field.

Research in Norway shows that approximately 10 % of all children and adolescents in Norwegian schools are bullied 2 - 3 times a month or more often. The prevalence gradually decreases with increasing age for both sexes. Exposure to bullying is related to numerous health complaints, and results from cross-sectional and prospective studies generally show a statistically significant association between victimization signs of poor mental and somatic health. Individuals who are both a bully and a victim seem to be particularly vulnerable. Girls also report more health complaints than boys. The problems can last for several years after the bullying ended, but there is still a lack of studies investigating causal mechanisms and long-term effects.
